According to Japan's "Yomiuri Shimbun" report on October 12, Japan will lift the ban on automatic flying of small drones over residential areas in 2022. Major IT and airlines plan to use drones to deliver express delivery and open up new business areas. Although facing high technical thresholds in ensuring flight safety, companies are still striving to develop it into an emerging growth industry.
JP Lotte Logistics, a joint venture established by the Lotte Group and Japan Post, said on September 30 that it has successfully used an autonomous drone to complete an express delivery experiment, which is the first time in Japan. The experiment was carried out in Hakuba Village, Nagano Prefecture this summer. JP Lotte Logistics sent a drone carrying fresh food from the foot of the mountain to the top of the mountain with a height difference of 1,600 meters for delivery. After unloading, it returned to the foot of the mountain and flew a total of 10 kilometers.
According to the report, the communications giant Kaidi Diai will work with a number of enterprises and local governments to try to make drones fly automatically in residential areas, roads, office blocks and other places out of sight this fall. Kaidi Diai has developed a management system for multiple drones at the same time, and is about to start a large-scale verification experiment.
According to reports, previously, Kaidi Diai has put into practical application the experiment of unmanned aerial vehicle flying in unmanned mountainous areas outside the field of view. Since the summer of last year, Kaidi Diai began to provide procurement and delivery services to 600 families living in the mountains of Ina City, Nagano Prefecture. Residents can place orders from local supermarkets via cable TV or telephone, and Kadidi will airlift the goods to the public hall near the residents’ residence. At present, residents can purchase about 400 kinds of goods in this way. Daxiong, a 94-year-old living alone, uses the service once or twice a week, and he feels very convenient that he does not need to go out to purchase in person.
According to research institutes, the Japanese drone industry will be driven by the logistics industry in the future. The market size of the drone industry in 2025 will reach 646.8 billion yen, 3.5 times that of 2020. The key to popularizing drones is to extend battery life, because it is directly related to ensuring flight safety, increasing cruising range and increasing load.
