Xinhua News Agency, Houston, September 14 (Reporter Xu Jianmei) Hurricane Nicholas landed on the Gulf Coast of Texas in the south-central United States in the early morning of the 14th. According to data from the U.S. power tracking website "National Power Outage Information Network", more than 500,000 households and business users in Texas have been out of power.
The National Hurricane Center said that "Nicholas" made landfall at around 1:30 on the 14th Eastern Time. The maximum wind speed at that time was 120 kilometers per hour, and it weakened to 112 kilometers per hour after a few hours of landing.
The National Hurricane Center warned that from the coast of Texas to southwestern Louisiana, the strong winds and heavy rainfall brought by "Nicholas" may cause floods and urban waterlogging.
Before "Nicholas" landed, Texas and neighboring Louisiana had declared a "state of emergency." Texas Governor Abbott called on local residents to be prepared for "potential damage caused by floods and rainfall." On the 14th, the airport and port of Houston, the largest city in Texas, were suspended, and primary and secondary schools were suspended.
Louisiana Governor Edwards said on the 14th that "Nicholas" is expected to pose the most serious threat to the southwestern part of the state, "there may be heavy rains and flash floods."
Both Texas and Louisiana have suffered multiple hurricane disasters. In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina broke down the breakwater of New Orleans, the largest city in Louisiana, and killed more than 1,800 people in the disaster-stricken area of the southern United States.
