Influence of glass fiber content on the material of FRP sheet

Oct 14, 2024

Glass fiber is the strengthening material of light mining plate, which is the fundamental guarantee of strength and toughness. At present, the production line of light mining plate generally uses two technologies, yarn cutting or short felt.

The cost of yarn cutting is low, and the production can be adjusted flexibly.

Its disadvantage is that due to the production process, the glass fiber content of the plate is low and only 22%, so the strength of the plate is poor and the plate is brittle and easy to break. And it is easy to crack when bending and pinning, which is easy to produce water leakage.

The cost of short felt is higher, but the glass fiber content of the plate can be relatively high, generally greater than 30%, so the strength and toughness of the plate are very good, and it will not crack during the process of handling and napping.

In the production of felt, products with larger thickness will be two or even three pieces of felt together to achieve the thickness of the plate and glass fiber content requirements.Customers may worry about layering, but that worry is unnecessary.

The same method is used in the automotive and aviation industries to achieve the highest strength. We have done a similar experiment: we used 60 layers of 600g/m² sheets to make a 80cm thick product, and cut it along the thickness direction for strength testing. There was no difference between it and the normally produced plate.

In addition, due to the high resin content of the boards produced by the yarn cutting process, the resin flow during production will cause the boards to be thinner at high points, resulting in uneven cross-section thickness, and thin parts are particularly susceptible to damage.

At the same time, the corner arcs of the plate are relatively large, which is quite different from the shape of the steel plate, and the overlap with the steel plate is not good.
