[Global Times Comprehensive Report] The Chinese Ministry of Commerce website announced on the evening of the 16th that on September 16, China’s Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao informed the depositary of the "Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement" (CPTPP) New Zealand Minister of Trade and Export Growth Okon Namibia submitted a written letter from China formally applying to join the CPTPP. The ministers of the two countries also held a teleconference to communicate on the follow-up work related to China's formal application for membership.

Foreign media quickly paid attention to the news. "Nikkei Asia" stated that China "finally applied to join the CPTPP." Chinese leaders said in November last year that China would "actively consider" joining this 11-member agreement. Singapore’s “Lianhe Zaobao” stated that it was reported that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore, one of the CPTPP member states, stated this week that “Singapore has expressed interest in China’s accession to the CPTPP.” This statement means that Singapore is the first to express its acceptance of Beijing.
CPTPP originated from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) reached by 12 countries including the United States, Japan and Canada in 2015. After Trump took office, he announced that the United States would withdraw from the TPP. In 2018, 11 countries that initiated TPP negotiations signed the CPTPP.
