Sandwich construction is a special type of composite structure that consists of two thin, strong, rigid panels flanking a lighter and relatively thicker core material. The sandwich structure has the typical characteristics of light weight, high stiffness and high strength. Sandwich structures work in a sense like I-beams when subjected to bending loads. The I-beam flanges (like the panels of a sandwich structure) bear in-plane compressive and tensile loads, while the I-beam webs bear the shear loads (like the core material of a structural sandwich structure).
