Most of today's yacht hulls are made of fiberglass, the sandwich structure panel.

The main materials are divided into inner and outer layers of glass fiber + core material, and outer layers of epoxy resin.

The surface layer bears tensile and compressive stresses in sandwich sandwich structure. Local flexural stiffness is often negligible. Traditional materials such as steel, stainless steel, aluminum and fiberglass are often used as surface materials. With the rapid development of carbon fiber, carbon fiber has become one of the main choices of sandwich sandwich structural composite materials.

The purpose of the core is to support the panels so that they do not bend inward or outward, and to keep them in position with each other. Because the core material usually has a lower density, the mass of sandwich structure material is much less than that of non-sandwich structure material which can bear the same load. Another function of core material is that its addition expands the space between two panels. The greater the space between panels, the greater the moment of inertia of the whole sandwich structure material section, so its overall strength will be improved to a certain extent. Therefore, core material usually needs to have good shear strength.

In order for the surface and core to cooperate, the adhesive between the surface and core must be able to conduct the shear forces between them. The adhesive must be able to withstand shear and tensile stresses, and the adhesive layer is usually made of resin.
