Product Description

Different yacht hull materials have different durability. Let's take a look at the durability of yacht hull composites.

At present, polyester resin is mostly used as adhesive and glass fiber reinforced composite structure. This kind of yacht has a long service life, is not easy to wear, the price is relatively low, and the maintenance is simple. Typically this ready-made boat is hand lay-up and varies in thickness from 3/16" to 1/2" depending on size. Shapes also come in a variety of shapes, including foam sandwich construction, balsa wood sandwich, polyoxyethylene sandwich, and wood-core double-hull yacht hulls. The sandwich of smaller hulls has enough buoyancy to support the yacht without sinking to the bottom of the sea. But not on a bigger boat.

Sandwich cores reduce the resonance and sound transmission characteristics of solid fiberglass yacht hulls, increase the stiffness of thinner hulls, and potentially reduce weight. Because of the labor-intensive nature of this construction, yacht hulls of sandwich construction cost more than typical solid fiberglass yacht hulls. A balsa wood sandwich core in diameter section can be used with FRP for large flat areas such as strong decks and cabin roofs. Another sandwich material is polyvinyl chloride foam, which can be sheet or glued scrim, similar in cross section to a balsa wood core. PVC is impervious to water, highly resistant to corrosion, and lighter than a balsa wood sandwich core.

Polyester resin is an adhesive used for FRP hulls, but its shelf life, watertightness and bond strength are not as good as epoxy resins. However, the price of epoxy resin is too high, and it may damage the operator's skin, so it is rarely used now. However, the epoxy used as the adhesive is impermeable to water. It remains an invaluable adhesive for wooden boat hulls, wood core double hulls and balsa wood cores.

Wood core double hulls are different from balsa wood and PVC core double hulls. The latter two rely on a sandwich core for added strength, and the wooden core is often a yacht hull made of narrow slats without a frame structure. These slats are generally secondary wood, and the inner and outer FRP cladding also protects the sandwich core material, greatly increasing the strength and making the yacht hull form a solid whole. Bulkheads are produced in the same way as yacht hulls. It is fixed on the complete yacht hull with glass tape to increase the lateral strength of the yacht hull. This form of construction makes it suitable for small workshops and hobbyists, as the methods of building wooden boats from large blocks of wood and hard molding the hulls of fiberglass yachts are being phased out.

For wood core yacht hulls, polypropylene fabric is preferred over fiberglass. Because the polypropylene cloth has strong adhesion, is easy to flatten, and is light in weight, it will not produce harmful "glass particles" when grinding; its cost is higher than that of the fiberglass hull, but from the perspective of the cost of the entire yacht, it is only one irrelevant factors. It can be the best kind of cladding if combined with epoxy resin for wood sandwich construction. It has better toughness than ordinary fiberglass, but it is not suitable for solid plastic yacht hulls.

A few years ago, another structure was found on the west coast of the United States: that is, a layer of fiberglass was added to the foam plastic as the outer panel to build the hull of the yacht. Its advantage is that it combines the hardness of the yacht hull interlayer with the hardness of the glass fiber reinforced plastic wrapped outside. No doubt other methods are constantly being created, but many of them require the use of small yards and equipment and tools available to amateur producers. From this point of view, the sandwich structure of fiberglass and composite yacht hulls will be used for a long time.

Gel coat resins are used for the exterior surfaces of yachts. Due to the gel coat layer on the surface, the FRP material will not be damaged when it is slightly scratched, and the FRP product will be protected; the weak link in the water resistance and chemical resistance of FRP products is that after the glass is coated with a gel coat layer on the surface of the product, since there is no fiber exposed on the product surface, Avoid direct contact between fibers and liquid media such as water, which improves water resistance and chemical resistance; Since gel coat resin has better weather resistance than general molding resins, it can improve the weather resistance of FRP molded parts; FRP gel coat The layer product has high hardness and smooth surface, which can cover fiber traces.
